Blog Spammed! Where is the mustard?
Thursday, November 4th, 2004I just got blog spammed! I had to laugh, ’cause I’m pretty sure I make up about 50% of the readership of this blog, so posting ads here is a little like fishing in the desert… The downside is I’ll need to turn on moderation and such, so the hordes (sic) of legitimate commentors will have to work that much harder. (Hey, I’ve had three, count ‘em three, comments to date!)
Happy Halloween!
Sunday, October 31st, 2004Just sitting here on my front steps, handing out candy to the hordes of ghouls, ghosts, witches, faeries, and princesses. I’ve noted two small, but significant differences this year:
One is the number of firefighter costumes, it’s good that the firefighters and police officers have regained some of the respect in the hearts and minds of kids, where is had dwindled away over the years, being replaced by the products of the Hollywood-hype machine and WWF-like side shows.
The second thing is the comments I’ve gotten about my Bush/Cheney signs by kids. While they where evenly split, like “Bush, Boo!” and a “My dad’s voting for Bush!”, They were comments from kids. While I would normally enjoy seeing them take an interest in their leaders and the process of selecting those leaders, it’s seems many kids are coming away from kitchen tables of the neighborhood with only a disdain for one candidate or the other, without knowing any of the issues, or what distinguishes one from the other. Probably, not unlike their parents…
I guess the score is: Firemen, 1 - Politicians, 0.
Dodging the bullet
Tuesday, May 18th, 2004While our sysadmins run around trying to save the exchange server from yet another NetSky variant, I can’t help but gloat (just a little
as I connect to out qmail server (we use both) with evolution and wonder what a virus looks like. While I know “pride goeth before the fall” and all that, It’s nice to know, at least this once, I made a good choice when I decided to back Linux. I’ve used Linux as my work, developement, and play desktop almost exclusively since ‘98 and, for the most part, it hasn’t let me down. I haven’t alway been able to do all the things my counterparts in the Win32 world can do (et. la. shockwave, directx games) but they rarely can do what I take for granted (loopback file systems, open just about any disk format, tun/tap wizardry, use a real shell, etc, etc, etc…)
